2019年GameFi概念被提出，初始定义为Game Finance，即在游戏中加入了金融属性的元素。2020年9月，Yearn.Finance创始人Andre Cronje发布一条相关推特，内容大意是：当时的DeFi发展主要趋向于traDeFi（交易类型的DeFi)，而在将来DeFi的属性将更趋向于游戏化。
此时的GameFi再次被加入了DeFi（去中心化金融）的概念。
GameFi概念成型是在2021年2月份以后，GameFi定义成为了 Game+NFT+DeFi 的综合性理念，通过区块链分布式的结构，用游戏呈现去中心化金融和NFT（非同质化数字资产）的价值。
一方面使游戏具有金融属性的买卖投资概念，一方面让GameFi资产具有唯一性和不可篡改属性，对参与者的资产安全作出保障。
GameFi的出现，得益于DeFi与NFT技术、产品的成熟。NFT为DeFi引入了以稀缺性为标准的差异化资产，而DeFi同样通过金融方式赋予NFT 商品化的价值，两者的结合为链上游戏带来了全新的生命力。
市场在GameFi概念中已经延伸出了数种侧重点不同的游戏类型：
1)原生GameFi游戏： 以NFT资产通过DeFi的借代实现去中心化金融类似“挖K”的收益效果。此类游戏大多为卡牌游戏，二级市场相对繁荣，头部链游具有完善的生态体系和庞大的用户基础。
2)现实金融映射GameFi： 这种链游以现实金融体系映射进区块链行业，GameFi起到了中心化银行的部分作用，在此类链游中玩家可以完整的体验股市、基金、期货等所有传统金融中所具有的金融方式。
3)以游戏体验为主的GameFi： 此类链游注重沉浸感，加重了游戏的属性，同时兼顾游戏内数字资产的生态，使得游戏在好玩的基础上，产出类似主流数字资产的游戏数字资产。
经过多年的发展，许多GameFi游戏现在已经显示出元宇宙的萌芽形式。GameFi已经发展到GameFi 2.0，可以整合元宇宙的概念并向前迈进。GameFi 2.0 将完全去中心化 Play AND Earn 游戏，并在可玩性和收益之间取得平衡。它也让玩家完全控制，并最终与元宇宙融合，实现基于Web3.0的沉浸式游戏、生活和社交体验。
