Tramadol, a potent analgesic, is used to treat moderate to severe pain that is resistant to other analgesics. Tramadol, a synthetic opioid, reduces pain perception by acting on the brain and spine (central nervous system).
For ongoing pain treatment, tramadol is offered in an extended-release version. This type of tramadol shouldn't be taken on an as-needed basis to alleviate pain.
In addition to acting at the opioid pain receptor, tramadol decreases the absorption of two neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and serotonin, which may enhance its pain-relieving effects, though the specific mechanism is unknown.
