If you are looking to read or open Thunderbird mail files directly, you can export your Thunderbird data to various formats—including Outlook PST, MSG, EML, HTML, EMLX, Yahoo, Office 365, or Gmail—using the eSoftTools Thunderbird to PST Converter software. This tool can be downloaded and installed on any Windows system. You can download the free edition of the Thunderbird to Outlook tool, which allows you to export the first 25 items from an MBOX file or a Thunderbird account folder into PST or other supported formats.

Thunderbird stores local mail in MBOX files, which are just plain text files with no extension, one file per folder, sitting in the profile folder under Mail or ImapMail. The easiest way to read one directly is to copy it into the Local Folders directory and restart Thunderbird, then the folder shows up like any other.

You can also open the file in a plain text editor to read the messages, since each message starts with a From line, but that gets messy with attachments, so the Local Folders trick is cleaner if you just want to browse the mail normally.
